ROBERT JAMES SELBY

Yorkshire-born, London-based songwriter Robert James Selby unveils his debut album
Scrap-Book Ballads Vol 1 on his own Grasmere label on Monday 6 August . Inspired by the romantic and decadent lives of the poets and the 90s Northern club scene as much as by the likes of Bob Dylan and Bert Jansch, the album is drawn from Robert’s huge cache of self-penned songs written on the couches and honed in the bars of countless European cities.

Making the move to London when he was eighteen, with just his acoustic guitar and a notebook full of self penned songs, Robert’s love for music began his parents Beatles, Stones and T Rex albums. A fascination with poetry was not a common thing for a South Yorkshire teenager, but at sixteen he picked up a guitar to put two and two together to write songs. On leaving school he led the life of a troubadour, drawing up lyrics from his experiences around Italy and France with sometimes literally pennies to his name, before finally settling in London.

An album featuring ten self-penned songs recorded with Sheffield producer Alan Smyth (Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Richard Hawley) so far remains unreleased.

He counts Jarvis Cocker, Fyfe Dangerfield and Carl Barat among his fans, supporting The Libertines at their 100 Club comeback show as well as several gigs with Dirty Pretty Things. Carl’s sister Lucie makes her singing debut on Scrap-Book Ballads, while Dangerfield says  “’Song To Soho’ really paints a picture with words as good as any song should. Rob has lyric writing down to a T.”

Robert is currently playing dates around the UK and is available for interviews.

BLUEFLINT SUPPORT THE PROCLAIMERS ON TOUR

Blueflint are delighted to announce that they will be supporting The Proclaimers on their Like Comedy UK album launch tour during autumn 2012. See full dates below.

The sound of Blueflint is defined by the sublime close harmonies of Deborah Arnott and Clare Neilson whose voices, both ethereal and warm, interweave in ballads and songs of eerie melancholy and heartfelt charm.  Intertwining banjos, fiddle, double-bass and drums accompany the singers in beautifully-crafted songs that swoop easily from the dark underbelly of folk to buoyant Americana-tinged ballads. Blueflint successfully thwart attempts at musical pigeonholing; their fresh and original sound refuses to sit squarely in any one genre, bringing an unexpected twist to the banjo sound and gaining them fans from across the musical spectrum.

Their second album Maudy Tree has received national radio play (BBC Scotland, BBC Wales, BBC Ulster, BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal, BBC Shropshire and many internet radio sites,) and the band undertook a successful UK and Irish tour in Autumn 2011 to promote the new album.  In addition to the tour schedule with The Proclaimers, Blueflint will be performing at a number of UK venues over the summer including...

23 June       The Betsey Trotwood, 56 Farringdon Road, London EC1
24 June       Leigh Folk Festival, Leigh on Sea, Essex

SHARON KING & THE RECKLESS ANGELS

Acclaimed Edinburgh singer-songwriter Sharon King releases her first album Nothing = Everything on Monday 23 July as part of a trio with the Reckless Angels on her own label. Joined by fiddler Amy Geddes of renowned Scottish folk group Tannas and Vera van Heeringen formerly of the New Rope String Band, Sharon delivers twelve original songs of life, love and longing, drawing on the influence of old-timey backporch Americana and windswept Celtic folk.

An accomplished storyteller and natural raconteur with an easy grace, Sharon’s astute observations blossom into songs of pathos and gentle bonhomie, warm enough to melt the iciest of hearts. Colours and textures are artfully woven through the narratives by the mandolin, fiddle, viola, guitar and voices of The Reckless Angels.

The album was recorded at Edinburgh’s celebrated Castle Sound Studio by Stuart Hamilton and mixed by Tim Mathew, best known for his work with James Yorkston, King Creosote and Eliza Carthy.

Having begun her musical career recording three albums with the band Shake The Shack, Sharon began her solo career in earnest in 1999 with the solo album 24 Hours. Two more albums followed before forming The Reckless Angels trio in 2010. Described by former Scottish Tourism Minister, Jim Mather as “a national treasure”, Sharon is the current holder of Edinburgh Folk Club’s Songwriter Of The Year Trophy.

Sharon and the Angels launch the album on Wednesday 18 July at Douglas Robertson’s: Number 42, Edinburgh, before embarking on a 12-day tour of Scotland.

Nothing  = Everything has been part funded by Creative Scotland.

Sharon is available for interview.
